We stayed in Vik (see what I did there with the title?? Ha!) for several days as a base camp for several spots we wanted to visit on the south coast. The first days we spent close to town at the plane crash, lighthouse, and more black sand beach.
Oh, and puffins!!
Next stops are Svartifoss waterfall and Skaftafell National Park .
We base-camped out of Vik on the south coast for a few days. This is the view out the front door of the Arsalir Guesthouse.
In 1973 this US Navy DC-3 crash-landed on the beach because they ran out of gas (except they didn’t really, the pilots just screwed up) and we just left it there. Talk about litter.
I’m fairly certain the Icelandic equivalent of the Land Act granted all Icelanders a farm and a waterfall since it seemed like every single one we drove past had one behind the house.
This moss takes over 100 years to grow and is the reason off-road driving is strictly forbidden in Iceland. You can, however, walk on it wihout causing harm. It’s super soft!
