We finally had a busy day today! We dragged ourselves out of bed to get to the Robben Island ferry by 9:30. After visiting the island and prison, we took the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and explored for a couple hours. That more or less killed all the daylight and we rounded things out with a visit to a local microbrewery’s taproom for dinner. No sense completely breaking a good system.
These first two photos are the view back toward Cape Town and Table Mountain from Robben Island and the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years as a political prisoner.
This is a closer and clearer view from the ferry of the waterfront and stadium in Cape Town. The city is creeping up Signal Hill behind the stadium. The haze in the background near the ocean is smoke from the fire south of us on the cape. It’s under control but is still chewing up forest land every day.
Other people closer to the fires have taken these photos.

And a satellite took this one showing the smoke being carried out to sea for 60+ miles. http://tinyurl.com/m2y5ftc
